Purring and spinning |
Given people’s affection for cats, and especially the sound of a cat purring, some folk tales had to arise to explain why cats purr. One goes this way: a lovely princess loved a handsome prince, but a witch put a curse on the two, and the princess, sealed up in a room, had to spin a large amount of thread in only a few days or the prince would die.
But her three cats came to her aid, and she was able to finish with the thread. Afterward, the cats were given the ability to purr, a reminder of the sound of the spinning wheel.
