Here’s a centuries-old bit of cat lore that is (almost) a snippet of poetry: if a cat washes behind his ear, a stranger will appear.
Over the year this piece of folk wisdom got refined somewhat: washing behind a left ear meant the stranger was a woman, washing behind the right ear meant it was a man.
