Egyptians, like people everywhere, had certain symbols and figures they liked to wear as charms or amulets. One that was commonly worn was the utchat, the “sacred eye.” It consisted of one large stylized eye, with several small cat figures engraved around it. The connection between cats and eyes was obvious enough, for the Egyptian word for cat, mau, not only was the
sound made by cats, but also meant “to see.”
