Double or single coat

In discussing cats’ hair, the proper term to use is coat, not fur. Shorthaired cats have a double coat or a single coat. A single coat means the hair is very fine and lies close to the body, resulting in a smooth, satiny look, which is especially attractive in black cats. A double coat has long guard hairs and a thicker undercoat. Naturally the double coat looks thicker and more plush than the single coat.
